Plea for Lighter Measures: Horațiu Potra Stays in Custody

Recent developments in the high-profile case of mercenary Horațiu Potra have led to a ruling by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, which decided that he will remain in preventive custody. In contrast, his son and grandson are to continue their legal proceedings under house arrest.

This decision was made public on Monday, following the rejection of appeals lodged by Potra and his family against the extension of the preventive measures imposed in relation to ongoing investigations into attempts to overthrow the constitutional order. The court’s verdict is final and cannot be contested further.

In a statement circulated via TVR1, it was reported that Horațiu Potra, along with his son and grandson, argued in front of the judges that their extradition from Dubai was voluntary, undertaken after accepting a streamlined extradition procedure. Their defense team contended that, had they not opted for this expedited process, the extradition could have turned into a lengthy and potentially futile endeavor, particularly given Potra’s status as a resident in Dubai and his established business interests there.

Potra also highlighted in his defense that he and his family members are the only individuals still in preventive custody among a total of 22 defendants linked to this case. Notably, this group includes Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, who faces serious charges regarding the destabilization of Romania’s constitutional order.

During the judicial proceedings, Potra pointed out that all other indicted parties enjoy either freedom or have no restrictive measures placed against them, contrasting his family’s situation of confinement. He invoked these facts as grounds to request a reassessment of his custody status, seeking a transition to a less severe measure.

However, the judges at the High Court ultimately rejected these pleas, solidifying the current preventive measures. This outcome follows months of diligent efforts by Romanian authorities to locate and apprehend Horațiu Potra, who, alongside his relatives, evaded arrest by leaving Romania just before his impending capture.
